Welcome and introduction
Greetings, and thank you for visiting our website. As homeowners in the Las Vegas Valley, we have seen a considerable change in the expense of maintaining our landscaping in the last several years.
First, the escalating cost of watering trees and plants, even a minimal desert landscaping, can now exceed your power bill during the hottest summer months. At the same time, summer temperatures are rising, and new all-time records are being set.
Purpose of this series: We want to create a series of posts to inform you of the multiple steps necessary to ensure your landscaping stays viable year-round with minimal recurring maintenance and reparation expenses and, of course, uses water most efficiently.
Addressing landscape irrigation challenges in Las Vegas
Whether it be new or existing landscaping, our first piece of advice is to make sure that your tree/plant materials are hearty enough to withstand the extremes that our Southern Nevada Desert environment is known for.
Without that, every effort from then on is futile. Unfortunately, some trees and plants unsuitable for our ‘Climate Zone’ can be purchased in the valley and will not survive or perform well in the mid or long term.
The experience of living with landscaping in southern Nevada for a moderate amount of time will impart some knowledge. Still, the escalating cost of trees and plants doesn’t allow for experimentation in this regard anymore.
Now more than ever, we feel it is essential to consult a landscaping professional with what we would term a ‘good’ amount of experience in the valley.
Strategic planting for cost efficiency
Knowledge and experience of tree/plant exposure tolerance can expand the pretty limited palette available for landscaping.
We advise you to eliminate ‘mass plantings’ and have your essential trees and plants determined and their locations established. As you move from the high-visibility areas of the yard, you can lighten up or eliminate unnecessary trees and plants for future savings.
This post is a brief introduction only. We will dive into greater detail as the series continues.
Next steps: Irrigation solutions
In our next post, we will discuss the ‘game-changing’ ways of irrigating your yard.
